Week 4 Prompt: SAMR MODEL
Substitution: new tech to replace old tech
![]() |
To implement the Augmentation phase of the SAMR model, my students recently stopped creating the program newsletter using Microsoft Word and Publisher but now use Mailchimp. Mailchimp allows them to create newsletter templates, import email lists and send mass emails to our following. This allowed an increase in functionality where we stopped mailing, then stopped attaching a saved Word file to an email but now create and send out of one platform.
Modification: significant task redesign
To implement the Modification phase of the SAMR model, I plan to have my students use a Google Doc to share their college research. Students are to research and gather as much information as they can about the school of their choice as their classmates comment about comparisons from their findings and their initial feedback. Students will now use Google Docs to do this so that they can comment and share and sync all in one document.
Redefinition: the use of technology to complete new tasks
To implement the Redefinition phase of the SAMR model, students are now able to take virtual tours of college campuses. This is a technology that wasn't always available but now has made it possible for students to have a wider range and scope when choosing a college to attend. My students are required to answer questions about the physicality of a college campus based upon our visits and now I am able to have them do the same assignment by completing virtual tours to schools that offer them.

You have enlightened me with some of the new internet tools that are available, with so many tools available how do you decide on which ones to implement? How many students are you following? How do you track who is doing what? Or does your learning management system do the tracking?
ReplyDeleteAs a huge tech blog follower I often use the advice of other educators to choose tools that work best for me. My students are divided into typical classroom sizes where I present during school hours or for an event here at the University. I do all the tracking just as a regular classroom teacher would.
DeleteWhich tech blogs would you recommend?

I also learn so much from my IT classes and peers and then implement it into my program. I've even used most of these tools to enhance our staff production in my office.
I found many of your tools useful, and I find it beneficial to know what older students are using compared to my elementary students. I am trying to move away from the basic version of PowerPoint with my older students, and that is why we are using Office Mix (which I mentioned in my post). I use prezi with my students as a presentation tool, but since an email address is required to sign up, I am unable to have the students make their own prezis. That is probably my biggest hurdle when using web 2.0 tools...my students only have email addresses that "work" within our school district. I have accessed a teacher account for Glogster which gives a class set of generic user names and passwords, and the students really like creating their own Glog. I also liked your idea of using the virtual school information as an assignment. What a great idea, and something I could use with other virtual sites with my students.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy reading what younger students are doing. I think Office Mix is pretty cool. I can only imagine your challenges with your students not being able to access emails outside of the district. For me, I have my students create something they can use for everything. We got into creating folders within Gmail so that they could separate College/School Info from Junk Mail. I'm glad you like the virtual school idea. One suggestion I have for that is to find a contact at a place you plan to virtually visit and then do a Skype call on top of that. It makes everything a little more personal.
DeleteI like the skype idea! That would be cool to use with an author visit. I could have my students take a virtual tour of the author's hometown, or take a tour from a place in the book. Then it would be great to skype with them. Thanks for the idea!
DeleteYour R is really helpful is having students not only take a college tour that they may not be able to take, but help them make an important decision that will impact their future.
ReplyDeleteYour M is also similar to others in the course. Your M and your R both work together for the same assignment tasks, but allow for integrative learning because of the various tools you're using.
The great thing about my R is that this technology wasn't available years ago. I like that it is something new yet useful.
DeleteHello Kiylise,
ReplyDeleteI liked your activities very much! I learned from you about mailchip, it looks very interesting, but I think I have to work with a big organization to use it' right?
